Step back in time to the turn of the century and hear a tale as old as Baltimore itself. It's here that duckpin bowling first began, sparked by Frank Van Sant at Diamond Alleys who made special pins crafted from woodmaker John Dittmar. When balls collided with these small sized pins they created an image likened to “a flock of flying ducks” - thus earning this classic game its name! It wasn’t until 1953, however, that inventor Ken Sherman created an automatic pinsetter for duckpin bowling. This became a popular tool to use when playing the game and still continues to be the most used pinsetter at most duckpin bowling locations. In 1982, The Women’s National Duckpin Association was founded to give women the opportunity to compete professionally in duckpin competitions.
